This ship was once called the USS Merrimac.  It was a Union wooden sailing frigate with a steam engine.  The Confederates cut off its sails and covered it with iron.  They renamed her the CSS Virginia.  The CSS Virginia was destroying the US Naval fleet of wooden frigates.
